U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross has announced that the department's Economic Development Administration is awarding a $2 million grant to the Clearfield County Economic Development Corporation to help construct a new River's Landing facility to accommodate small business tenants, according to a press release.

The grant will be matched with $2.28 million in state and local funds, and is expected to help create 50 jobs and generate $10 million in private investment.

DiamondBack Truck Covers of Philipsburg in Centre County was recently presented with the Pennsylvania Small Business of the Year award by U.S. Representative Glenn Thompson, R-Howard Township. DiamondBack founders and owners Ethan Wendle and Matt Chverchko were also been named SBA's Pennsylvania's Persons of the Year. In presenting the award, Rep. Thomson noted, "The success of DiamondBack is a testament to entrepreneurship, ingenuity and the economic opportunities that exist in small towns across the nation."

Friends, partners, volunteers and donors of the Food Bank gathered Tuesday morning at the local food bank site to honor the 2019 Hunger Hero Award winners.

Those honored and their awards were: Rep. Glenn Thompson, R-Howard, advocacy; Genetti Hotel, SureStay Collection by Best Western, corporate; Vough Acres, food donor; Marsha E. Goldstein, individual philanthropist; Geisinger, innovation and Joe Loehr, individual volunteer and the MisChiefs, an all-female volunteer group led by local resident Donna Bastian.

"I rise today to recognize the community development and revitalization efforts of Clarion, Pennsylvania," Thompson said in the September 10, 2019 issue.

"Recently (July 22), I was back in my district, touring Clarion's growing downtown region, meeting with small business owners and community leaders, and the progress and growth that I saw were truly exciting."

The celebration during Thompson's visit was focused on financing for a business and the framework that allows more needed housing for the homeless.

U.S. Rep. Glenn Thompson, R-15th District, and U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright, D-8th District, have introduced the Abandoned Mine Land Reauthorization Act (H.R. 4248) to reauthorize the Abandoned Mine Land (AML) trust fund.

According to a news release from Thompson's office, the bill will clean abandoned coal mines and foster economic development in communities that have been impacted by their closure.

The Environment Protection Agency and Army Corp of Engineers announced the end of the Waters of the United States (WOTUS) Rule on Thursday.

Two Pennsylvania congressmen, including Rep. Glenn Thompson, R-Howard, have introduced legislation to reauthorize the Abandoned Mine Land trust fund established 42 years ago.

Thompson, whose 15th District includes Indiana County, and Eighth District U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright, D-Lackawanna County, are co-sponsors of House of Representatives or H.R. 4248, the Abandoned Mine Land Reauthorization Act.

Back-to-school season is giving some Pennsylvania Republican lawmakers a chance to renew their fight for whole milk in schools.

U.S. Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) and U.S. Rep. Glenn Thompson (R-Pa.) are pushing to get whole and 2% milk back in schools. Those varieties were banned under the Obama administration nutrition guidelines. Currently, schools can only serve skim or 1% milk. The 1% option was allowed just last year when the U.S. Department of Agriculture removed that ban.

"This site here in Warren County. This is about national security."

And a desire to "identify concerns" and see how manufacturers "interface" with the federal government brought Congressman Glenn Thompson to Ellwood National Forge on Tuesday morning.

The visit was an opportunity for Thompson to meet with a number of Ellwood officials, specifically to discuss the company's role in the supply chain for the Department of Defense.

"We want people to know what we do," David Barensfeld, former CEO and current board chair said. "We're proud of it. Our company has evolved."

Living up to their bright red "Polk Center Strong" T-shirts, a throng of more than 500 area residents rallied Monday morning in Franklin to protest the proposed closing of Polk State Center.

The gathering in front of the Venango County Courthouse, an event coordinated by the AFSCME labor union, area legislators and the Franklin and Venango Area Chambers of Commerce, was focused on opposing the pending shutdown of the center.
