DiamondBack Named Pennsylvania Small Business of the Year
DiamondBack Truck Covers of Philipsburg in Centre County was recently presented with the Pennsylvania Small Business of the Year award by U.S. Representative Glenn Thompson, R-Howard Township. DiamondBack founders and owners Ethan Wendle and Matt Chverchko were also been named SBA’s Pennsylvania’s Persons of the Year. In presenting the award, Rep. Thomson noted, “The success of DiamondBack is a testament to entrepreneurship, ingenuity and the economic opportunities that exist in small towns across the nation.”
DiamondBack had a unique origin. Wendle and Chverchko were both engineering students at Penn State in 2003 when they were assigned an engineering entrepreneurial class project. The pair decided to turn their project into a reality and based their project in Philipsburg. The company manufactures truck bed covers, loading carriers, automotive accessories and apparel. Although they had a great idea, they were helped along the way by local organizations like the Moshannon Valley Enterprise Center (MVER.) “DiamondBack has been fortunate over our 16-year history to have received help from many small business organizations, co-owner Wendle noted. With the assistance of the SBA, MVER and other local groups, DiamondBack was able to expand into its current $3.8 million, 40,000-square-foot facility in the Moshannon Valley Regional Park.
“We are here to help and provide the tools for a company to succeed,” MVEC Executive Director Stan LaFuria said. “DiamondBack is a perfect example of what you can do with those tools. When you have good management, you have the potential to do some really good things.”
The company’s future looks bright, and it has continued to expand its production. For Wendle and Chverchko the award “recognizes not only the hard work done by our founding team and employees, but also the impact these organizations can have to help jump start business. We are honored to receive this award on behalf of our company, our employees and the many men and women who have partnered with us along the way.”
