Thompson Votes Against H.R. 1
WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson today issued the following statement after the passage of H.R. 1, the For the People Act of 2019:
“Our country was founded on the notion that governments derive their power from the people.
“Unfortunately, House Democrats voted to uproot this core principle and would prefer the federal government dictate how registration and voting practices occur in individual states. Today’s vote on H.R. 1, amounts to no more than a federal takeover of our election system for the benefit of a few.
“H.R. 1 invests in the political class and seeks to line campaign coffers with taxpayer funds, through a six-to-one government match. This means for every $200 in private contributions, the federal government will pony up $1,200. Hardworking men and women do not want the federal government to subsidize candidates with their tax dollars.
“If that were not egregious enough, H.R. 1 would change the Federal Election Commission’s bipartisan makeup to create a new partisan majority. This will have the chilling effect of limiting speech and the voices of the minority, which runs counter to our longstanding American traditions.
“House Democrats have packaged this as a bill for the people, but refused to accept countless amendments to ensure the integrity of our voting system. A prime example was the failure of an amendment that expressed a sense of Congress that allowing illegal immigrants to vote devalues and diminishes the voting power of citizens. The cheers of the radical socialist left this afternoon are an affront to the safety and security of our democracy.”
Rep. Thompson voted against H.R. 1. The measure was approved by a vote of 234-193.
