Thompson marks Presidents Day by Honoring Washington and Lincoln

February 15, 2009

Bellefonte, PA – U.S. Representative Glenn 'GT' Thompson, R-Howard, issued the following statement honoring two of the most transformational and inspiring figures in American history, Presidents’ Washington and Lincoln:

"While today we celebrate the lives of two American patriots in Presidents Washington and Lincoln, we must first take a second and reflect upon the moment that tested their leadership and conviction.

"From a war that pitted a young nation against the ruling empire, to a war that was anything but civil, the foundation on which this country was built and the ideals by which she stands today rest upon their shoulders.

"Washington fought to secure our independence. Lincoln fought to bring the principles of our independence to every American. Both men offered their lives in service to their country, and in defense of human liberty.

"As a nation, we cannot reflect upon who we are and what we stand for without first reflecting upon the lives of these two great men. Their story is the great American story – one of ordinary individuals rising to extraordinary heights of leadership and sacrifice.

"I think President Reagan said it best: America is a shining city on a hill whose beacon light guides freedom-loving people everywhere. And as we mark yet another Presidents’ Day, I think President Reagan would agree that, if not for Washington and Lincoln, our beacon light would not be as bright as it is today."
