Thompson Issues Statement on U.S. Withdrawal from the Iran Nuclear Deal

May 8, 2018

WASHINGTONU.S. Representative Glenn ‘GT' Thompson today issued the following statement after President Donald J. Trump withdrew the U.S. from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), commonly referred to as the Iran Nuclear Deal:

"In 2015, I voiced my concerns that removing economic sanctions would only have the effect of rewarding Iran and emboldening the regime to continue as the leading state sponsor of terrorism. It was a dangerous precedent to set, particularly when we know that Iran has a proclivity to funnel money to clandestine terrorist groups throughout the Middle East.

"Many American soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan lost their lives to Iranian-made explosive devices and the regime remains focused on destabilizing the region, in particular through the conflicts in Syria and Yemen. The nuclear deal failed to protect America's national security interests and I fully support withdrawing from this one-sided agreement and reinstating our sanctions as a message that the United States is clear in our convictions that the regime will never attain nuclear weapons."
