Thompson Announces Health Grant for Nurse Training in Rural and Underserved Communities

Washington, DC – U.S. Rep. Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson (PA-5) today announced the award of $350,000 from the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration to Penn State University’s College of Nursing’s Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship program. This program is dedicated to training nurses through service in rural areas and in medically underserved areas across Pennsylvania. The grant provides funding to approximately 20 primary care nurse practitioner students in their final year of study beginning this fall.

“Rural communities continue to face challenges when it comes to recruiting and retaining qualified nursing professionals. Funds made available through this grant will keep nursing students in their hometowns, making a real difference for Pennsylvania’s rural and aging populations,” said Thompson, who spent nearly three decades in non-profit healthcare. “These are the type of strategic investments that will pay dividends in the long-run when it comes to the overall health and quality of care in our communities,” added Thompson.

The training program is offered at five Penn State campuses, including University Park, Hershey, Mont Alto, Fayette and Worthington Scranton. It is anticipated that many of those involved in the program will continue to live and work in their home communities.
