Thompson: 2011 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Application Period Extended

August 30, 2011

Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) today announced that the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) application period will be extended due to Hurricane Irene response and recovery, according to U.S. Representative Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson, R-Howard. The NEW deadline for AFG applications is September 16, 2011 at 5:00 p.m. EST, one week later than the initial date.

“Many of the eligible applicants for the AFG grant application period, which opened on August 15, 2011, are fire departments and local emergency responders now engaged in recovery operations,” said Thompson. "This extension will allow FEMA and state and local emergency responders to address the immediate needs of our communities while providing adequate opportunity and time for applicants to apply for grant assistance.”

FEMA officials have noted that the grant system did not have any disruption of service due to the storm and therefore, information submitted to date is intact and applicants who are in the process of completing an application can continue. If applicants have not started their application yet, it's not too late.

The AFG website continues to have information and tools available to assist with preparing competitive applications (www.fema.gov/firegrants). Additionally, FEMA’s grant guidance document can be accessed at www.fema.gov/firegrants/afggrants/index.shtm.

“Our thoughts remain with those communities on the East Coast and across the Commonwealth impacted by Hurricane Irene,” Thompson added. “We pray for their safe and speedy recovery.”
