WASHINGTON, DC U.S. Representative Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson welcomed Jeff Tech student Ms. Cassy Lester to the U.S. Capitol on Thursday. Ms. Lester won First Place in the 2017 Congressional Art Competition for Pennsylvania’s Fifth Congressional District.

Ms. Lester, of Reynoldsville, was in Washington for a reception to honor the Congressional Art Competition’s First Place winners. Rep. Thompson met with Ms. Lester and took her and her family on a tour of the Capitol after the luncheon. He also delivered a speech on the House floor congratulating Ms. Lester.

Ms. Lester won for her acrylic painting titled, “Chocolate Lab.” An independent panel of judges selected Ms. Lester’s work from 37 entries, which is one of the largest groups to compete in Pennsylvania’s Fifth District competition.

The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for Members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, more than 650,000 high school students have participated in the nationwide competition.

Ms. Lester’s artwork will be displayed in a special exhibit in the U.S. Capitol for one year with winners from each congressional district across the country.

“It is an honor to welcome Cassy here today and to celebrate her First Place award,” Rep.Thompson said. “There were 37 entries this year and all were tremendous works of art. Hundreds of thousands of visitors to the Capitol will have the opportunity to see Cassy’s winning piece on display. I have the honor of pointing it out each time I walk with constituents through the halls of Congress. Congratulations Cassy!”
