H.R. 5038 addresses need for legal, reliable workforce

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R.5038, the Farm Workforce Modernization Act of 2019 by a vote of 260-165. Following the vote, Congressman Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson issued a statement:

“When I visit with farmers throughout Pennsylvania, the overwhelming lack of a reliable workforce is their biggest challenge,” said Rep. Thompson. “This bill extends the benefits of the H-2A visa program to our nation’s dairy farmers, who are the backbone of Pennsylvania’s agricultural sector. Although this bill is far from perfect, it is a step in the right direction towards addressing a major workforce shortage for Pennsylvania’s largest industry. I remain hopeful that my colleagues in the Senate will refine this legislation to produce a guest worker program that truly works for our nation’s family farms.”
