Thompson Supports Resolution Disapproving of Harmful “Waters of the United States” Rule

Washington, DC – U.S. Rep. Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson (PA-05) today voted in favor of S.J. Res. 22, disapproval of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Waters of the United States (WOTUS) rule. The proposal would otherwise drastically expand federal jurisdiction over state waters under the Clean Water Act.

Upon conclusion of the vote, Thompson released the following statement:

“The EPA’s Waters of the United States rule would be overly burdensome for private land owners and municipalities, subjecting economic activity to federal permitting, this includes farming, energy production, flood control and infrastructure projects. This is precisely why the proposal has been opposed in Congress on a bipartisan basis.

“In the hearings I have participated in as the chairman of the House Conservation and Forestry Subcommittee, the EPA has yet to provide justification for this rule. It will not bring about environmental benefits or increased safety for our infrastructure, but rather it would create another layer of bureaucracy that will delay projects and stifle economic activity. This is precisely why federal courts have put a hold on the rule from moving forward. Today’s vote is about being practical and getting America back on track.”
