Thompson Statement Following Passage of Bipartisan Bill to Repeal Medical Device Excise Tax

June 18, 2015

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson (PA-05) issued the following statement upon House passage of H.R. 160, the Protect Medical Innovation Act, which repeals the Affordable Care Act’s 2.3% excise tax on medical devices:

“Among the many problems with the Affordable Care Act, the medical device excise tax continues to stifle competitiveness and innovation. In Pennsylvania alone, this has a direct effect upon the 75,000 people throughout the Commonwealth who are employed by the medical device industry. Repealing this harmful tax will protect American jobs, while ensuring that patients continue to have access to life-saving medical devices.”

On June 17, 2015, Congressman Thompson, a co-sponsor of the legislation, spoke on the floor of the House of Representatives urging his colleagues to support passage of the Protect Medical Innovation Act.

H.R. 160 passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 280-140.
