***Thompson, Marino Announce Joint U.S. Service Academy Day Event***
Washington, D.C.—U.S. Representatives Glenn `GT’ Thompson (PA-5) and Tom Marino (PA-10) today announced their offices will hold a joint United States Service Academy Day event on May 14th, 2011. The event will offer area high school students the chance to learn about the exciting opportunities offered by our Service Academies and the eligibility requirements for admittance.
Representatives from each of the academies will be on hand to answer questions and distribute information. The event marks the date for when congressional offices begin accepting nomination applications for the upcoming year. High School students of all ages and parents are welcome and encouraged to attend.

The four academies that accept nominations through U.S. government representatives are: the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York; the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland; the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York. The remaining U.S. Coast Guard Academy at New London, Connecticut accepts candidates based on its own testing criteria.
The basic requirements for applying for a nomination are:
• At least 17 years of age, but not passed his or her 23rd birthday.
• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• Must be unmarried, not pregnant, and without legal obligation to support children and/or dependents.
• Must reside within the geographic boundaries of the 5th Congressional District.
• Must be able to meet the medical, physical, and academic requirements of the academies.
The nomination application process formally opened May 1, 2011 and the deadline date for acceptance of all materials is October 3, 2011. Students may visit Thompson’s website for additional information on the application process.
