Thompson Announces Kistler Accepts Nomination

Washington, DC—U.S. Representative Glenn `GT’ Thompson, R-Howard, today announced that Hobart K. Kistler of Centre Hall, Pennsylvania has accepted a fully qualified appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland.

“It is a pleasure and an honor to make this announcement,” said Thompson.  “Young men and women of Hobart’s stature give me renewed hope that the future of our military is in capable hands.  The education, leadership training,  and skills that he will learn at the Naval Academy will prepare him for a distinguished military career and assure his success in other endeavors.”

Kistler, who is ranked number one in his class of 131 at Penns Valley Area Senior High School, is class president and carries a 4 point grade point average.  He was a national semi-finalist in the National Merit Scholarships program, and a member of the National Honor Society.  Kistler became an Eagle Scout in 2006, has served as an assistant scoutmaster, and donated more than 400 hours in service to his community.

The son of the honorable and Mrs. Robert Kistler of Centre Hall, Kistler also has excelled in sports as captain of his golf and track and field teams.  He excels in horseback riding, skiing and soccer.  He also has taken on a project that has evolved into a book.  In 2004, Kistler began interviewing veterans of World War II.  Thus far he has interviewed more than 90 veterans and produced 400 pages on their stories.

“Hobart explained that the lessons he has learned in interviewing veterans has inspired him to join the military,” said Thompson.  “His academic excellence and his record in sports have prepared him mentally and physically for the highly competitive atmosphere of the Naval Academy.”

Kistler’s maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. James Fogel of Hollidaysburg and his paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kistler of State College, Pennsylvania.
