Thompson Announces $373,704 U.S. Dept. of Education Grant to State College Area School District

June 16, 2010

Washington, D.C.—U.S. Representative Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson, R-Howard, today announced the U.S. Department of Education has awarded a two-year grant of $373,704 for the integration of schools and mental health systems to the State College Area School District.

“This is a unique program that seeks to increase student access to quality mental health care by developing programs to link local school systems with the local mental health system,” said Thompson.

The funds will be used to connect mental health agencies with the schools, to facilitate a transition for a student from mental health facilities back into the school, and to develop a safe, comfortable place in the school where students can wind down.

“We will hire a liaison person to work with the mental health agencies and the schools,” said Jeanne Knouse, director of student services for the district. “This will provide us with the support necessary so all students are supported by the school system from start to finish. It enables us to really follow up and make sure no student gets lost in transition.”
