August 11, 2020

Bipartisan effort seeks resolution from House leadership

HOWARD, PA — U.S. Representatives Glenn ‘GT' Thompson (PA-15), Madeleine Dean (PA-04), Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-01), Susan Wild (PA-07), Chrissy Houlahan (PA-06), and Mary Gay Scanlon (PA-05) havejoined togetherto request House Republican and Democrat leadership work to extend the deadline for states and localities to spend Coronavirus Relief Funds for ideally one additional year.

The CARES Act appropriated $150 billion in Coronavirus relief funds to states and localities. To date, many states still have a balance of unspent funds. The bipartisan letter to House leadership states "less than 25% of the federal CARES Act resources allocated to state and local governments have been spent."

This advocacy comes less than two weeks after the introduction of the LOCAL Act, legislation introduced by Reps. Thompson and Dean that would extend the deadline to December 31, 2021.

"As we continue to address challenges associated with COVID-19, it has become clear that additional flexibility will be required to ensure that CARES Act funding is appropriately utilized in a manner consistent with the intent of the law," the members affirmed.
