October 20, 2011

Lock Haven, Pa. – Students from high schools throughout the Centre Region today attended a government seminar at Lock Haven University, in Lock Haven, Pa. “Government Outreach 2011” – an event hosted by U.S. Representative Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson, R-Howard, and sponsored by Lock Haven University – offered students of the 5th Congressional District insight into the role of the federal government and information on future career and educational opportunities.

The seminar’s activities included a welcome session from Lock Haven University officials, remarks from several motivational speakers, and career opportunity presentations from several event sponsors, including Ms. Amy Oswald, of Joy Mining Machinery. More than 150 students were in attendance from area high schools, including: Bald Eagle Area, Bellefonte, Central Mountain, Jersey Shore, Philipsburg, Penns Valley, and South Williamsport.

Rep. Thompson discussed his own education and career background, and how finding passion through work can create endless opportunity and self worth. “Passion, principle, and purpose - these three points have helped guide my life,” said Thompson. He also discussed how his own passion for “making a difference in people’s lives,” is what led him into the field of health care and on to run for Congress, where a key focus of his work is advancing policy solutions in the area healthcare. “If you have a passion, choose that path and it will enable you to succeed,” Thompson added.

Two guest speakers were Penn State Professor Dr. Lawrence (Larry) A. Schardt, the author of “The Magic Moment: Creating a Lifetime of Happiness and Success,” and Mr. Robb Armstrong, the creator of the syndicated comic strip “Jump Start,” which runs in more than 450 newspapers in 8 countries. Both individuals offered motivational speeches on pursuing dreams and finding success in life.

During the event, Thompson fielded a series of questions from students on numerous topics, including healthcare, education, and government regulations. Following completion of the seminar, attendees – including students from Central Mountain and Bellefonte High Schools – discussed their experiences at “Government Outreach 2011.”

Started by Rep. Thompson’s predecessor, former Representative John Peterson, “Government Outreach 2011” is a two-day government seminar for students of the 5th Congressional District. More than 350 students from Western Pennsylvania attended yesterday’s seminar at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford campus.
