Deadline Approaches for Assistance to Firefighters Grants

May 7, 2009
Press Release

Washington, DC—U.S. Representative Glenn `GT’ Thompson today reminded fire companies in the 5th District that the deadline for submitting applications for Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) is May 20th, 2009, at 5 p.m.   Guidance for submissions is available on the Federal Emergency Management Agency  (FEMA) website:

The primary goal of the grants is to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical services organizations.

“The program helps firefighters and other first responders purchase equipment, receive training, and conduct fire safety and prevention programs,” said Thompson, who is a 30-year veteran of the Howard Volunteer Fire Company.

The AFG awards will provide about $510 million to fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical service organizations across the country.

“I just want to remind our fire companies to get their applications completed in order to meet the deadline,” said Thompson.  “These grants are very competitive in nature and the details are important.”

The AFG Program is administered by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and FEMA in coordination with the U.S. Fire Administration.
