The Pension Protection Act of 2006 made two changes affecting tax-exempt organizations:
Tax-exempt organizations, other than churches, must file a 990-N. Most non-profits had not previously had a filing requirement.
The law also stipulates that a tax-exempt organization that fails to file for three consecutive years will lose its tax-exempt status.
Small organizations required to file Form 990-N will need to go to the IRS website and electronically file, or call 877-829-5500 by October 15, 2010.
To find out if your organization is at risk of revocation of tax-exempt status, please check out the IRS’s list by clicking here.
