Thompson Statement on President’s Foreign Policy Address on Terrorist Threat

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson (PA-5) issued the following statement in response to President Obama’s foreign policy address on the U.S. response to confronting the threat of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL):

“ISIL was building its capabilities and organizational support long before its territorial advances this past summer. Able to operate unchecked, the group has made significant advances, gaining ground, treasure, and weapons.

“In the interests of regional stability and U.S. national security, we must take action to isolate, disrupt, and defeat this organization and its support networks.

“The President has put forward a plan, while making it very clear the United States will need to engage in a protracted effort against ISIL's terrorist network in order to ensure its defeat. Given the President's distinct policy shift to include American troops on the ground in a consultation role and the expansion of military operations into Syria, the public interest will be best served by seeking Congressional approval. This will allow for a thorough review from the legislative branch. It is my hope that we can work together in assuring this mission is carried out in a manner that protects our national security and looks toward the long term stability of the region."
