Thompson, Marino Announce Joint U.S. Service Academy Day Event

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representatives Glenn `GT’ Thompson (PA-5) and Tom Marino (PA-10) today announced their offices will hold a joint United States Service Academy Day event on May 19, 2012. The event will offer area high school students the chance to learn about the exciting opportunities offered by U.S. Service Academies and the eligibility requirements for admittance.

Representatives from U.S. Service Academies will be on hand to answer questions and distribute information. High School students of all ages and parents are welcome and encouraged to attend.  Details are as follows:

Additional Information:

The four academies that accept nominations through U.S. government representatives are:  
U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York;
U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland;
U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado; and
U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York.  

Note: The U.S. Coast Guard Academy at New London, Connecticut, accepts candidates based on its own testing criteria.

The basic requirements for applying for a nomination are:  
Must be at least 17 years of age, but not passed his or her 23rd birthday.
Must be a U.S. citizen.
Must be unmarried, not pregnant, and without legal obligation to support children and/or dependents.
Must be able to meet the medical, physical, and academic requirements of the academies.  

The nomination application process formally opened May 1, 2012 and the deadline for acceptance of all materials is October 1, 2012.  Students may visit Thompson’s website for additional information on the application process.
