Thompson Issues Statement Following Speaker Ryan’s First Major Address at the Library of Congress

Dec 3, 2015

Washington, DC –U.S. Rep. Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson (PA-05) today attended the first major address of House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) at the Library of Congress.  In the address Ryan outlined his vision for the House in 2016, during a week that included bipartisan approval of legislation to reform elementary and secondary education, replacing the contentious No Child Left Behind, and a $300 billion, five-year reauthorization of surface transportation programs.

Following Speaker Ryan’s address, Thompson offered the following statement:

“Speaker Ryan’s address confirms for me that he is truly dedicated to leading a House that will provide real solutions to the challenges facing our country.

“I share his sentiment that the best government is one that empowers people with the tools needed for success, without stifling growth with needless rules and regulations.

“Similarly, the Speaker aims to empower Members of Congress to best serve the needs of their constituents by moving legislative proposals through the committee process, where differences of opinion can be hashed out, which often creates the best policy. This may seem like a basic civics lesson, but too often it has been missing from the legislative process.

“I welcome efforts to simplify the tax code and close special interest loopholes, which will allow us to lower tax rates for everyone. This will allow for further job growth and higher wages for workers, providing a much needed boost for the economy.

“I found the Speaker’s address to be a refreshing change of pace and look forward to working with him to better serve our country.”
