Thompson: Governor Wolf’s Washington Fundraising Trip in Poor Taste During 112th Day of Pennsylvania Budget Impasse

Oct 21, 2015

Washington, DC – With the Pennsylvania state budget impasse standing at 112 days, school districts struggling to make ends meet and social service programs running low on funding, Gov. Tom Wolf traveled to Washington, D.C. today to raise campaign funds.

In response, U.S. Rep. Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson (PA-05) issued the following statement:

“Pennsylvania has been 112 days without a budget, yet today, Gov. Wolf traveled to Washington, D.C. to raise campaign funds, which is nothing short of appalling.  The governor has a line item veto and rather than use his authority to ensure critical programs remain operational, he is more focused on rubbing elbows with elite special interests and filling his campaign coffers.

“There are several educational programs that are administered by the state, which operate solely on federal funding.  This amounts to millions of taxpayer dollars to combat the effects of poverty upon impoverished school children and disabled learners, yet they have been subject to Gov. Wolf’s near-sighted politics.

“The governor should never use children as political leverage and it is long past time for him to start acting like an executive. Pennsylvania needs leadership and if Gov. Wolf needs me to be in the room to help further the process and assist with negotiations, he has my number.”
