Thompson Announces Bryan R. Schmidt of State College Has Accepted an Appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy

Washington, D.C.—U.S. Representative Glenn `GT’ Thompson, R-Howard, today announced that Bryan R. Schmidt, 17, of State College, has accepted a fully qualified appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD.  Bryan is the son of Robert and Stephanie Schmidt.

“It is a great pleasure to have the honor of nominating outstanding young men and women to the service academies,” said Thompson. “Bryan has excelled both academically and in sports at State College Area High School and has a balanced outlook that will serve him well at the Naval Academy.”

Schmidt works as a YMCA –Pioneer Basketball referee and teaches fundamentals and sportsmanship.  He also announces varsity and junior varsity sporting events for the State College Area School District Athletic Department, which melds nicely with his work on the WSCH Morning Show and as a sports writer for the Lions digest Newspaper and the Little Lion Yearbook.  He is a member of Future Business Leaders of America and LEO, (Leadership, Excellence, Opportunity) Club.

Schmidt has a 3.9 grade point average and is a member of the National Society of High School Scholars, High Honor Roll, Columbia University Scholastic Press Association and has earned the Power of the Paw award.   He has lettered for two years in both varsity football and basketball. Schmidt was an integral part of the Little Lions football team that ended the 2009 season with a 12 - 3 record and advanced to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association’s "AAAA" state final for the first time in school history.

Heavily involved in community service, Schmidt was a part of the Centre County United Way Trash to Treasure, the State High Dance Marathon and the Cub Club/State College Basketball Camp.  He also served in Best Buddies, participating in activities to support and mentor mentally challenged high school students.

Schmidt’s paternal grandparents are Lorraine Schmidt and the late Capt. Henry Schmidt of East Falmouth, Mass.  His maternal grandparents are Deanna Lauer and the late Robert Lauer of State College.
